Varanasi (213 images)
The girls have gone to Mumbai to visit Harry the Jeweller (no really) so I signed up for a handily advertised two day tour to the holy city of Varanasi. There was a rickshaw tour of the old city, followed by a trip to the ghats, where religious ceremonies were in progress prior to burning the dead and scattering the ashes into the river. Very early next morning we embarked on a boat trip down the river, with stopovers to see houses, temples and mosques. Early morning is when it all happens, as the heat tends to be wearing once the sun gets up. Washing, batheing, praying and feeding are all best done in the morning, and it's only the burning that goes on all the time.
